DIRECTOR’S NOTE
ERINN HARTLEY (Director)
I invariably struggle to describe the devised work that I do. People often ask what the play is about. The truth is, this show is about whatever you need for it to be about. Come with an open mind, don’t think too hard, and let the experience take hold. I imagine you will feel things, you may not quite understand why, and you may not even like all of the things that you feel. And I hope sometimes you will laugh.
We worked with the concept of Obstructure, which urban dictionary describes as “a challenge or imperfection that becomes the framework for a creative endeavor.” From there, the ensemble shared thoughts, ideas, and experiences from their own lives. I gave them homework assignments and in-rehearsal ideas to try on the fly. We took from these elements and abstracted them, rarely putting meaning on the work–just tasks, risks, and high stakes. The meaning is for you to decipher, and I believe it will vary from person to person. The work is real and present, amidst the oft absurdity. There are moments of humor and of heartache. Obstructure is non-linear but isn’t heady or out of reach.
The ensemble has given their time, energy, and selves to step onto the stage for this endeavor. This means time away from families, friends, and pets; money spent on quick dinners and babysitters; chores set aside; and some real soul-searching vulnerability and hard work. I do not take lightly what I’ve asked of them. I’ve asked for their trust and they’ve given it.
